Found a Box of Old Videos? This Summer Is the Perfect Time to Digitize Family Videos

Assorted vintage camcorders and VHS, cassette, and reel-to-reel tapes arranged on a blue background, evoking nostalgia.

Summer has a funny way of bringing old memories to the surface. Maybe you're cleaning out a closet, helping your parents downsize, gathering with family for a graduation party, or getting ready for a family reunion. Suddenly you come across a box of old VHS tapes, camcorder tapes, or film reels. You know they're important. You know there are family memories on them. But when was the last time you actually watched one?

For most people, the answer is years. Sometimes decades.

Why You Should Digitize Family Videos Now

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say, "I've been meaning to do something with these." The problem is that videotapes and film reels don't last forever. Every year that passes, they become a little more fragile. The tape itself can deteriorate, and the equipment needed to play these formats is becoming harder and harder to find.

Where those tapes have been stored matters, too. Many family videos spend years in attics, garages, basements, sheds, or storage units where they are exposed to New Hampshire's hot summers, cold winters, and changing humidity levels. These conditions can speed up deterioration and increase the risk of damage. While some tapes survive surprisingly well, others may already be showing signs of age.

My advice is always the same: if those videos matter to you, don't wait any longer. The best time to digitize family videos is before age, heat, humidity, or equipment failure takes away the opportunity.

Can You Still Digitize Family Videos?

One of the questions I hear most often is whether old videos can still be converted. The answer is usually yes. Most families have a mix of formats, including VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, and sometimes even film reels.

If you're looking to digitize family videos, chances are good that your tapes can still be preserved and enjoyed again. Even if you're not exactly sure what format you have, that's okay. Many people aren't. Often, the first step is simply identifying what's in the box and determining the best way to preserve it.

Once your videos are converted to digital files, they're much easier to watch, share, back up, and pass along to future generations.

Why Family Videos Are So Special

What makes family videos so special is that they capture things photographs simply can't. A photo can remind you what someone looked like, but a video lets you hear their voice, see their expressions, and watch the little mannerisms that made them who they were.

The sound of a grandparent laughing. Your children running through the backyard. A birthday party, holiday gathering, school concert, or family vacation. Moments that seemed ordinary at the time often become the memories we treasure most.

I've watched clients see family videos for the first time in decades, and it's amazing how quickly memories come flooding back. Sometimes the people in those videos are no longer with us. Sometimes the children in the footage are now adults with children of their own. There is something incredibly powerful about seeing those moments come to life again.

When you digitize family videos, those memories become accessible again instead of sitting unseen in a box. They can be shared with family members across the country, included in memorial slideshows, or simply enjoyed on a quiet evening with the people you love.

Don't Let Another Summer Go By

As we move through another New Hampshire summer, I encourage you to take a look around for those forgotten tapes and reels. Gather them into one place. Write down any dates or notes you remember. Talk with family members about what's on them.

Then make a plan to preserve them before more time passes.

Those videos contain moments you'll never get back. They deserve more than a dusty box in the attic, basement, or garage.

If you have old family videos and aren't sure what format you have or what your options are, I'd be happy to help. Whether you have a few tapes or several boxes, now is a great time to digitize family videos and preserve those memories for future generations.
